MTU SA’s role in the transformation of the Angolan Fisheries

Angola's economy has undergone a period of transformation in recent years following the country’s 25 years of civil war. Part of that were the efforts to rehabilitate and modernise the domestic fishing industry. MTU South Africa (PTY) Ltd, supplier of engines, complete propulsion and power systems in Southern Africa is proud to have played a role in those efforts.

MTU SA has reached a milestone by supplying a total number of 142 propulsions systems and genset engines for 81 of the vessels. The Angolan fisheries have seen a decline following the country’s independence in 1975. In improving the sector’s operations, in 2007 the Angolan Department of Sea Fisheries ordered a fishing fleet comprising of 600 new fishing vessels. Says Michael Baumann, Managing Director of MTU SA: “We are very proud to have been given an opportunity to partner with the Angolan government in the developments of the country’s economy.”

The engines designated for the project were of the MTU series S60, 2000 and 4000. Renowned for their excellent features such as low fuel consumption and reliability, MTU engines were selected for the Angolan Fishing fleet due to the Angolan Department of Fisheries’ confidence in MTU as well as the outstanding service provided by the in-country distributor: Jembas Assistência Técnica, Lda.

MTU SA supplies diesel engines under a brand name that stands for quality, reliability, dependability, design adequacy and low life cycle costs. Responsible for sales and support of MTU diesel engines, MTU South Africa focuses on products in Marine, Power Generation, Mining, Construction, Rail and Defense applications in the Sub-Saharan region.
