Taking Antarctic exploration to the next level

SA Agulhas II has become a flagship for South African innovation

SA Agulhas II is a high-tech South African ice-breaking polar supply and research ship built in 2012 by STX Finland in Rauma, Finland, to replace the ageing SA Agulhas. It has become a crown jewel of the department of environmental affairs, and will greatly help research efforts in the Antarctic.

Unlike her predecessor, SA Agulhas II was built from the beginning as both a polar supply ship as well as a research vessel. She has on-board laboratories for scientific research as well as cargo holds and tanks for supplies for South African polar research stations. In addition, she has accommodations for 100 passengers in 46 cabins and facilities such as a gym, library, business centre and a 100-seat auditorium.

This is her story, from a dream to the most advanced icebreaker ever imagined; courtesy of Urban Soul Communications in Cape Town.
