Communication at sea no longer is limited to ship-to-shore radio signals and costly phone calls. The marine industry has joined with the rest of the world in jumping on the wireless communications bandwagon.

It was in the 1960s when the first space satellites began orbiting the earth and almost immediately the impact on global shipping was exceedingly positive. Maritime communications, which were mostly stagnant or very slow in development, exploded almost overnight.
